Every question the lab's genie can answer, answered here too — the same file, read by a page instead of a genie.

The Beat Lab's genie takes a few words and builds a beat out of them. Ask it a question about the lab instead, and something quieter happens: the page answers from a list of answers it is already carrying — instantly, with no wish spent, no model asked, and nothing about the question leaving the page. There are twenty-five of those answers. This page is the same twenty-five, answered outright.

They are not written twice. The lab's own question bank is one file in the lab's repository, and this page is derived from it, so an edit to a single word moves the genie's answer and this page in the same commit. Every answer was written from one sentence of the lab's published explainer, and that sentence is quoted under it here — the answer is short on purpose, and the sentence is where the long version lives.

Nothing outside the twenty-five gets an invented answer. Asked something it does not hold, the lab says so and points at the explainer: that one's outside the lab — "read how it works" at the foot of the page has the long answer.

how does this work?

it is a drum machine that runs in your browser, with a genie that turns a few words into a beat — the sounds are built here, the genie runs on machines the workshop owns, and the board only repeats what the genie sealed.

the genie will read the grid and write a short review of it — that reading is also what the board takes.

it is the lab's public shelf — a groove, and the genie's words about it, put up for anyone to hear, with no name on it.

who can see my beat?

nobody, until you put it on the board — and then anyone who visits, with no name and nothing about you attached.

what does the genie run on?

is this AI?

the beat and its review are written by a language model on the workshop's own machines — this answer is not: it is one of the lab's own written ones, kept in the page.

what is a wish?

a wish is one ask of the genie — a beat, a tweak, a reading, a name, a photo — and because each one costs real computer time the genie grants three in any thirty seconds and a hundred and twenty a day.

why did it say rest?

the wishes came faster than the genie's allowance — the count on the buttons is the wait it named itself, usually ten seconds, and your beat is untouched while it runs.

what is a remix?

take a groove off the board with ▶ listen now, change something you can hear, and put your version up — the board remembers where it came from.

what is the seal?

every time the genie describes a beat the server puts a tamper-evident seal on those exact words for exactly the beat it was shown — and the board accepts only text whose seal checks out.

how do I put it on the board?

the switch on the card does it in one tap — and if the genie has not read your beat yet it reads it first, which costs one wish.

how do I take it down?

the same switch takes it down, and that costs no wish — but only from the browser you posted it in, which is the one place the key to it exists.

what are the pads?

a pad is a key you tap for a single sound — a zap, a riser, a wood block — and each of the six can be set to any of the twenty-two.

what do the two rows do?

they are two rows of your own under the ten drum voices — give either one any of the pad sounds and it plays that sound on the steps you tap. the genie never writes on them and never clears them.

can I use my own sounds?

no — every sound here is built from raw waveforms the instant it plays, so there is nothing to bring in; what you choose from is the twenty-two the machine makes.

what does swing do?

swing delays every off-beat — the gap after each even step grows and the next gap gives the time back, so a bar is still exactly a bar. at zero the beat is dead straight; the dial runs to sixty.

what do warmth and space do?

warmth drives the mix through a soft saturation — clean at zero, rounder and thicker as it rises; space is how much of a short reverb room you hear; the filter is a low-pass that takes the top off every sound at once.

does it work offline?

once the page has loaded the machine needs nothing else — the beat, the sounds, the pads and the grid all run in your browser, so the music keeps playing if the connection drops. only the genie, the board and the voice need us, and each says so if it cannot reach us.

Where these answers come from

This page was derived on 2026-09-04 (UTC) from the lab's question bank — beat/bank.json, twenty-five entries, fingerprinted bank 92f6c73c2afc: the first twelve hex of the file's own sha256. The lab stamps that same twelve hex into its page at every build, so the two can be held up against each other — if they match, this page and the genie are answering out of one file.

The law those answers are given under is one sentence: an answer is instant and costs no wish, no model is asked for it, nothing is sealed or posted by it, and nothing about the question — not a request, not a log line, not a stored key — ever leaves the page it was typed on.
