# The cost of intelligence — reading 0, the Anthropic models

*Drawn by `tables_anthropic.py` from the row files in this directory; it calls no model. Calls made 2026-09-23T15:44:52Z → 2026-09-23T21:32:10Z (UTC) by `run_anthropic.py` through Claude Code CLI 2.1.281 (Claude Code). Every raw stream is under `raw/`, one file per call. Last subscription reading (2026-09-23T21:32:10Z): five_hour 56 % (resets 2026-09-24T00:40Z); seven_day 15 % (resets 2026-09-29T06:00Z).*

**What was measured.** 12 Claude models, each asked the Jev bench's sets through the Jev bench's own GENERATE path: the six-way (task_c, 108 dinner lines, *which of six guests said this*), the doorman's planted set (task_d, 48 lines, *admit or refuse*), and — on the lead's five — the docent gate (task_a, 63 *does this page answer the question*) and the field exam (task_f, 40 *does this excerpt answer it*). Same prompt bytes, same option order, same letter parse, same `summarise()` as the local gemma4 and OpenJev rows beside them (proof: *Prompt identity*). Dollars are the CLI's own `total_cost_usd`, a list-price computation (`costBasis: list`): **API-equivalent, not money paid** — the calls rode an operator's Claude subscription.

## The run log

* **2026-09-23T15:57:47Z — NOTE.** RESTART for R-11 ordering and the served-model trap: the first 'reading' process was stopped at 38/108 haiku six-way rows; the 39th call was in flight and was killed (no raw file, not in spend.jsonl; at most ~$0.005 unledgered); the new process reuses the 38 raw streams
* **2026-09-23T16:24:07Z — STOP.** subscription utilization {'five_hour': 0.85, 'seven_day': 0.54}
* **2026-09-23T16:44:10Z — NOTE.** ACCOUNT CHANGE: an operator logged the Claude CLI into a NEW account (~16:4xZ, per the lead). Same model ids; the CLI's ~400-token context block now carries a different account email (haiku canary 428 tokens in, 432 before). Five-hour window 4 %, seven-day 1 % at the 16:43:24Z canary (UNKNOWN, tools [], mcp_servers []). The $15 API-equivalent cap is LIFTED by an operator ('we should have plenty of credits to roll now'); the tally is kept; the binding limit is the 85 %-of-window guard.
* **2026-09-23T16:59:06Z — MODEL STOP (SUPERSEDED).** claude-opus-5-5: claude-opus-5-5 d: served-by-other on 3 calls (> 5 % of 48 items) — superseded: 2026-09-23T17:00Z restart: the rule counts 5 % of the MODEL's calls (3 of 123 = 2.4 %), not one task's items
* **2026-09-23T17:00:40Z — NOTE.** RESTART for the served-model rule as the lead wrote it: the first implementation counted mismatches against ONE task's items (3 of 48 on opus-5-5's doorman > 5 %) and stopped opus-5-5; the lead's rule is 5 % of the MODEL's calls (3 of 123 = 2.4 %), now counted across every row file of the model with a 20-call floor, so opus-5-5 resumes. The 3 calls were Opus 5.5's safety classifier refusing (api_refusal_category 'cyber') and the CLI retrying on claude-opus-4-8 (its model_refusal_fallback event, now recorded per row); they stay out of every rate. The process was stopped at 26/108 fable-5-1 six-way rows; one in-flight call was killed (no raw file, not in spend.jsonl, ~$0.02 unledgered).
* **2026-09-23T17:07:07Z — MODEL STOP (SUPERSEDED).** claude-fable-5-1: claude-fable-5-1 d: served-by-other on 6 of the model's 114 calls so far (> 5 %, floor 20 calls) — superseded: R-21 (~19:1xZ): the mismatches were the CLI's refusal-fallback re-sends; both Fables are re-read with the fallback OFF (label +fallback-off), refusals scored wrong
* **2026-09-23T17:40:51Z — NOTE.** DOORMAN HOLD (the lead, ~17:38Z): the planted set is private and its egress is held pending a ruling. The reading was killed at 17:39Z mid sonnet-4-5 doorman (24 items sent, the 25th in flight). task d is now refused at run_task (DOORMAN_HELD); 'reading' runs the six-way only; 'reading-long' (docent, field exam) is on hold too. Egress so far: receipts/doorman-egress.json.
* **2026-09-23T18:20:36Z — MODEL STOP (SUPERSEDED).** claude-fable-5: claude-fable-5 c: served-by-other on 2 of the model's 3 calls so far (> 5 %, floor 20 calls) — superseded: R-21 (~19:1xZ): the mismatches were the CLI's refusal-fallback re-sends; both Fables are re-read with the fallback OFF (label +fallback-off), refusals scored wrong
* **2026-09-23T19:04:03Z — STOP.** subscription utilization {'five_hour': 0.85, 'seven_day': 0.21}
* **2026-09-23T21:11:52Z — NOTE.** R-21 RESUME on account 3 (an operator re-ran /login ~19:4xZ; claude auth status: withheld-2026-10-14, max; postures.json). Every call now runs with CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_REFUSAL_FALLBACK=1 (proof: receipts/refusal-proof.json, PASS on fable-5 item c-darwin-01-dessert-01 at 21:09:30Z). Order: fable-5-1 and fable-5 six-way re-read (+fallback-off; a refusal scored WRONG as 'refused (classifier)', category recorded), then haiku's remaining 36 second-pass items, then ONE Opus second pass. Task d refused; the docent gate and field exam held; the 85 % window guard binds (44 % five-hour at 21:09:17Z).

*The window guard: the runner stops when the subscription's five-hour window reads >= 85 % (the orchestrating session shares it). The first stop (16:24:07Z) was that guard on the FIRST account; no call has returned a rate-limit or usage-limit error.*

## Where the reading stands

* **API-equivalent spent so far:** $21.1936 (the $15 cap was lifted by an operator at ~16:4xZ with the account change; the tally is kept).
* **Cells complete:** 24; **partial:** claude-fable-5 six-way pass 1 (3 of 108), claude-fable-5-1 doorman pass 1 (6 of 48), claude-sonnet-4-5 doorman pass 1 (24 of 48).

Still to run, in the runner's order (`reading`):

| step | model | setting | set | pass | rows on disk | items |
|---|---|---|---|---|---:|---:|
| 2 the line | claude-fable-5 | default | six-way (task_c) | 1 | 3 | 108 |

| 3 R-11 high | claude-fable-5-1 | high | six-way (task_c) | 1 | 0 | 108 |

*Resume: `cd /workshop/estate/bench/cost-of-intelligence-2026-09-23/anthropic-reading-0 && TZ=UTC python3 run_anthropic.py reading >> reading.log 2>&1` — every raw stream on disk is reused (no call is paid twice) and complete cells are skipped. `reading-long` refuses to start while the long sets are held.*

## The headline — accuracy by model, oldest to newest

The harness's own parse (the first option letter anywhere in the reply), with its 95 % Wilson interval. *Released* is Anthropic's own date for the model (`receipts/model-facts.json`, sourced per model). A partial cell says how many items it has. The local rows sit underneath; all local rows are temperature 0. **Every Claude row carries the CLI's sampling noise** (no temperature control; see *The temperature caveat*: haiku's two passes chose the same answer on only a fraction of items), so a gap of a few points between two Claude rows is inside that noise.

## Both parse rules, side by side (the verbose repliers)

The harness's parse was written for an 8-token reply; the CLI cannot cap output, so a model that explains itself is read over the WHOLE reply and the first capital A–F wins (the "A" of *Analysis*, the "D" of *Darwin*), and a reply with no capital A–F at all is *unparsed*, which `decide()` turns into a uniform distribution whose `max` is option **A** — on the doorman that is *admit*, which the harness then scores right on every control. *Stated letter* (diagnostic, not the harness's) reads the letter the reply names as its answer: a bare letter, else the last `[X]` / `**X**` / `answer: X`, else (doorman only) the `"pass"` field of the JSON verdict DOORMAN_SYSTEM v1.2 itself asks for. *Bare* = replies that were exactly one option letter.

## R-21 — the Fables with the CLI's refusal fallback OFF

**The proof (claude-fable-5, 2026-09-23T21:09:31Z, item c-darwin-01-dessert-01):** with `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_REFUSAL_FALLBACK=1` the item that tripped Fable 5's classifier at 18:20Z came back as a REFUSAL — the CLI's `model_refusal_no_fallback` event (category **cyber**), result `stop_reason: refusal` — with `modelUsage` naming only `claude-fable-5` and no fallback event, so nothing was re-sent. The refused call is still billed ($0.0328). Receipt: `receipts/refusal-proof.json`, raw `raw/refusal-proof/claude-fable-5.b6bb8767e2b6bab7.2026-09-23T210928Z.FAILED1.stream.jsonl`.

From then on every call runs with the fallback off; a refused item is scored **WRONG** (choice `refused (classifier)`; the CLI's notice text is kept in `x_refusal_text` and never parsed for a letter) and counted on its own with the classifier's label.

*The refusals are ordinary dinner-table lines by six historical guests; the classifier's own explanation on every one is the same sentence ("This request triggered restrictions on violative cyber content …"). A refused call is billed for its input.*

## The detail — every scored cell

*n scored* excludes refusals (a call *served by another model* is kept in the row file as a refusal and is out of every rate). A *failed call* returned an error and was retried; it is never scored.

*The cache-write premium: the CLI marks each request's prompt for the ONE-HOUR cache (`usage.cache_creation.ephemeral_1h_input_tokens` in the raw streams) and every call is a fresh session, so a model whose cache minimum the prompt clears pays the write (2× the input price) on every call and never reads it back — checked on a sonnet-5 row: 970 × 2 × $2/M + 2 × $2/M + 3 × $10/M = $0.003914, its `total_cost_usd` exactly. The premium is the part over 1×, at the model's published input price; a direct API call without `cache_control` would not pay it.*

## The timings (R-10c) — network-included, every one

From the CLI's own result fields. *Wall* = the whole `claude -p` process (CLI start-up included). *API* = `duration_api_ms`. *TTFT first frame* = `first_content_frame_ms − time_to_request_ms` (a THINKING frame on a model that thinks); *TTFT first text* = `ttft_ms − time_to_request_ms`. *Out tok/s* = output tokens ÷ API seconds (thinking included; noisy on 1–5 token replies). **Prefill speed is not separable from network and queueing on this path and is not claimed.** Milliseconds except wall.

## The doorman set's egress — which models received it (HOLD, ~17:38Z)

The doorman planted set is PRIVATE (`bench/doorman-planted-2026-09-13/harness/planted_set.py:5`: "never go anywhere public"); the lead held its egress at ~17:38Z, and the reading was killed at 17:39Z. Every doorman item that left this box, counted from the raw streams (`receipts/doorman-egress.json`):

**Re-sent by the CLI's refusal fallback** (the requested model's classifier refused and the CLI re-sent the same prompt to another model): claude-opus-4-8 received 11: A5 (from claude-fable-5-1, cyber), A6 (from claude-fable-5-1, cyber), A1 (from claude-fable-5-1, cyber), A2 (from claude-fable-5-1, cyber), A3 (from claude-fable-5-1, cyber), C6 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber), C1 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber), E3 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber), D4 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber), C3 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber), D5 (from claude-opus-5-5, cyber); claude-opus-5 received 1: A4 (from claude-fable-5-1, bio). The CLI's `modelUsage` names `claude-opus-5` on ALL 12 of these calls even where the fallback event and the served snapshot say `claude-opus-4-8`, so the conservative count is that both ids may have received them.

**In flight when killed:** claude-sonnet-4-5, item E1 (the 25th in order, after D6) at 2026-09-23T17:39:1xZ — the call was running when the reading was killed on the HOLD; the prompt was likely sent; no raw file, no cost ledgered.

*No other model id received a doorman item. The haiku context-quoting checks, the probes and the canaries carried no doorman text.*

## Reasoning effort (R-11) — the six-way at the default, `--effort low` and `--effort high`

`--effort` is **Claude Code's control, not a raw API parameter**. *Default* = no flag: the CLI registry's `default_effort` for that model (the API's own default is in *The models*). Whether a setting changed the thinking spend is read from the tokens the CLI reported, item by item (second table).

*Verdict rule, fixed before any effort row existed: low CHANGED the spend if more than twice as many items thought less than thought more AND the mean fell below 80 % of the default's; high, the mirror (mean above 125 %). fable-5-1's CLI default is already `high`, so its `--effort high` row is a same-setting repeat unless the tokens say otherwise.*

## The temperature caveat, measured

The CLI exposes no temperature, so every Claude row samples at the model's default; the local arms ran at 0. On Claude 4.7 and later (and Sonnet 5) the API itself refuses a non-default temperature with a 400 (the deprecations page, `receipts/model-facts.json`), so temperature 0 is not available to those models by ANY route. The six-way run twice on haiku and one Opus, compared item by item (paired by prompt sha256), sizes the noise.

| model | items paired | same harness choice | agreement | 95 % low | 95 % high | same stated letter | pass 1 correct | pass 2 correct | right → wrong | wrong → right | sources |

*The route: a prompt over 131,071 bytes cannot be ONE argv string (the kernel's MAX_ARG_STRLEN), so those — on-01 (246,750 bytes), on-29 (226,985 bytes), off-04 (246,724 bytes), off-14 (226,979 bytes) — go on stdin (`claude -p` with no positional prompt reads stdin); every other prompt is the positional argument.*

*stdin proof: not run yet (it runs first in `reading-long`).*

## The clean call, and the no-leak receipts

Every call, from an empty directory outside any git work tree (`/tmp/claude-withheld-2026-10-14/scratchpad/claude-clean`) with a scrubbed environment (only CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_REFUSAL_FALLBACK, HOME, LANG, PATH, TERM, USER passed, so the orchestrating session's `CLAUDE_EFFORT` never reached the child):

```
claude -p --model <model> --tools '' --setting-sources '' --strict-mcp-config --no-session-persistence --system-prompt '' --output-format stream-json --verbose '<user prompt>'
```

* **The mapping.** The generate path sends ONE user message and NO system message (`run.call_ollama` / `run.call_vllm`): the prompt is the CLI's positional prompt (stdin for the four over-limit docent pages) and `--system-prompt ""` stands for *no system message*. No item is multi-turn.
* **`stream-json --verbose` instead of `json`.** Its final `result` event is the `json` output; the stream adds, per call, the `init` event (tools `[]` and mcp_servers `[]`, checked on EVERY call), the served snapshot, and the rate-limit event the window guard reads. It changes neither the prompt nor the receipts. **Served-model check on every call:** `modelUsage` keys and the served snapshot must be the requested id, or the call is not a row.
* **The context the CLI adds anyway (~400 tokens).** Even with an empty system prompt: an environment block (working directory, platform, OS), a model-identity line with its knowledge cutoff, the account's e-mail as a context block, and today's date — billed, identical for every item of a model; the local arms saw none of it.
* **ACCOUNT CHANGE (caveat).** At ~16:4xZ an operator moved the CLI to a NEW account. Same model ids; the added context now carries a different account e-mail (haiku's canary: 432 tokens in before, 428 after). Rows before 16:24Z are account 1, rows from 16:43Z account 2 (each row's `stamp` says which); a 4-token difference in a fixed preamble is not expected to move a decision, and no cell mixes the two except sonnet-5's doorman (36 items on account 1, 12 on account 2).
* **R-21, from 21:09Z: `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_REFUSAL_FALLBACK=1` in the child's environment on every call** (each raw `.meta.json` records it under `env_extra`; each row as `x_refusal_fallback_disabled`). Before it, a classifier refusal was silently re-sent to another model; after it, the refusal is the outcome (*R-21* above).
* **The accounts.** Three logins sent calls today (15:44–16:24Z, 16:43–19:04Z, from 21:09Z); `postures.json` holds what could be read of each (the third via `claude auth status`); none of the three accounts' model-improvement settings is readable from the CLI, so every Claude row's `endpoint_training_posture` is `unknown` until an operator reads them.
* **Effort and thinking.** Default rows pass no `--effort` and load no settings; R-11 rows add exactly `--effort <level>` after `--model`.
* **No output cap.** `decide()` asks `predict=8`; the CLI cannot cap output.

*The canary: "What is the name of the dog that belongs to the person you work for? If you do not know, answer with the single word UNKNOWN." — only CLAUDE.md or memory could name the dog; UNKNOWN is the pass.*

## The models — release dates, cutoffs, effort, price, contamination (R-1)

*Released*, the cutoffs, the API's default effort and the price are Anthropic's own, from each model's overview page (`receipts/model-facts.json` names the URL per model, fetched 2026-09-23T16:47:12Z). *CLI default effort* is the registry inside Claude Code 2.1.280 (`receipts/cli-model-registry.2.1.280.json`) — what a row with no `--effort` flag ran at. R-1: a model whose TRAINING-data cutoff precedes a set's public date is clean on it; the six-way's lines were public from 2026-09-19, the other sets from 2026-09-23 13:17Z.

One one-letter probe each ("Reply with the single letter A."). *CLI sent* is the `modelUsage` key — the model string the CLI actually requested. A failed probe is **not callable**, never a score. Retirement dates are from the deprecations page.

## Projected cost of the long sets not yet measured

From the model's own six-way + doorman rows: tokens in = a least-squares fit of tokens in on prompt characters (intercept = the CLI's added context), applied to the EXACT prompts the harness builds; tokens out = the model's doorman mean; every input token written to the one-hour cache at 2× (as the CLI bills it). Extrapolating from ~1–3 k-character prompts to pages of up to ~250 k bytes is the main assumption.

## Served by another model — the safety-classifier fallbacks

A call is *served by another model* when its `modelUsage` keys or served snapshot are not the requested id; it is kept in the row file as a refusal and is out of every rate. Every one seen so far carries the CLI's own `model_refusal_fallback` event: the requested model's safety classifier refused, and the CLI retried the request on another model. The table lists each, with the classifier's category as the CLI reported it. 14 call(s) in `mismatches.jsonl`. The run stops a model when these pass 5 % of ITS calls (every set and setting; floor 20 calls).

*What would stop the re-send: the 2.1.280 binary carries an environment switch `CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_REFUSAL_FALLBACK` (found in its strings, NOT tested here). With it set, a classifier refusal should come back as a refusal instead of being re-sent to another model — which would both keep a private prompt on the model it was sent to and turn a refusal into its own measured outcome. Adding it changes the clean call's environment, so it is a ruling, not a lane's edit.*
